Kazoos are a musical instrument that transform the sound of your own voice - if you can hum a tune then you can play a kazoo!
While the kazoo was invented relatively recently - historians believe the first was used in around 1840 - they are similar to a traditional instrument used in Africa.

How It Works
The distinct sound made by a kazoo is caused by the vibration of the thin membrane. As sound travels through the instrument from your vocal cords, it vibrates. The sound waves bounce off the inside of the kazoo as the travel towards the membrane, and reflect back off it, causing some frequencies to add and others to cancel each other out. While the kazoo might look a bit like a clarinet, it's actually closer to a drum!
