How Does it Work?

Microscopes work by using a system of lenses to magnify the contents of the slide, similar to a magnifying glass. Lenses bend the light that pass through them so the rays are spread apart. For example, the distance between a fly's eyes, for example, is made ten times bigger by a 10X lens. The eyepiece (the part you look through) contains a lens that is fixed, but most microscopes are compound microscopes, meaning there are other lenses of different strengths can be interchanged. The microscope may need to be 'focussed', which means moving the lenses up or down to find the point at which the image 'resolves', or where it can be seen clearly.
